TESO Ferry on CNG
To and from Texel by ferry on compressed natural gas30-08-2018
TESO (Koninklijke N.V. Texels Eigen Stoomboot Onderneming, or Texel’s Own Steamboat Company) has the first European CNG-powered ferry. PitPoint took care of the engineering, construction and operation of the CNG bunker station on this Frisian Island. The first decision to be made with care was finding the right location for the bunker station. It had to fit in with the landscape in order to make sure the access harbour of Texel does not lose any of its (tourist) attraction. We worked closely together with Rijkswaterstaat (Dutch Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management), the municipality of Texel and Liander (network company that laid the gas pipeline) in the permit and execution phases. The bunker station is supplied through a seven kilometre gas pipeline. No tank trucks are required to supply the fuel to the island as is currently the case for LNG. The decision to use CNG also makes it easy to switch to 100% Biomethane in due course.
